Has American Citizenship Morphed from a Blessing to a Curse?

It is now time to start looking seriously at issues for the 2008 Presidential election that transcends political parties. The new president needs to reestablish a pervasive mindset that native born American citizen workers are deserving of good economic respect and not be forced into being economic chattel by modern day robber barons.

Currently de facto slavery is reshaping America’s economy to the detriment of its native born citizens. The modern day slavers are exploiting two deadly techniques to debilitate the American worker. Outsourcing jobs to both domestic and foreign suppliers signals that one’s job is cheaper done outside, so he or she is expendable. Illegal immigration offers slaver status to modern robber barons because these illegal aliens are quasi slaves being pitted against American citizens in low skilled domestic jobs that cannot be outsourced to global suppliers in developing nations. The robber barons can laugh aloud, “Why pay a high price citizen when you can get three illegal aliens for the same money!”

I chatted with people who worked for a company that meets corporate outsourcing needs. These people worried aloud that the United States was setting itself up for significant political and economic shocks should a radical change in the world order occur. They argued that depending on the continued positive relationships with foreign countries supplying significant goods and services left the nation vulnerable to the political whims of these supplying nations. They cited the high priced Middle Eastern oil as a prime example of the US economy being held hostage by our reliance on foreign producers of our goods and services who are acting against our national interest.

When our discussion turned to the outsourcing of vital corporate and customer personal information the comments that people in foreign countries now have access to personal information on millions of American citizens were bone chilling. It was tough digesting that foreign customer service representatives now have knowledge of our personal business that they can share with whomever – friend or enemy. These foreign customer service representatives are today’s legalized strikebreakers because the growth in their use devalues American workers by showing that there are global competitors waiting to take American jobs who are willing to work for less pay and under third world business practices.

As the discussion shifted back towards domestic corporate outsourcing, the issue of allowing someone outside of the corporation to have access to strategic business directions might be nightmarish. Do these outside sources provide venues to industrial spies to steal confidential information from a service supplier? As employees leave at outsourced service suppliers, how good are corporate secrets with these knowledgeable people moving from job to job? Does this outsourcing signal to your employees that corporate allegiance is now out of vogue for the corporation has no long term commitment to their employees’ development, so it is everyone for herself or himself?

It is therefore important to hear from the Presidential candidates on what their plans are to reinvigorate the stature of the American worker in the US jobs market. Will the 2008 Presidential candidates allow continued de facto slavery to be the counterbalancing force working against American workers’ realizing their economic clout?
