HAMPTON, Va. – Mobs of students Tuesday night ran down the streets of Hampton University’s campus after hearing about the 2008 Presidential win of Barack Obama.

Fists were raised as full carloads of people rode down the streets blasting hip hop and chanting “Obama.”

Students were in awe of the president-elect.

“This is overwhelming!” said Lauryn King, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C. “I didn’t think this would ever happen,”

“I don’t even have the words to explain what I’m feeling right now. My grandma was sitting up in jail fighting for our rights and now she lived to see this.

“We have a black president!”

Outside of Ogden Hall, a crowd of students formed and was jumping up and down and chanting. Another campus crowd gathered outside of the Student Center, where students found a way to unlock the doors.

“I don’t know how they got in the door, but I just followed and ran through,” said Shana Pryor, a junior from Hopatcong, N.J.

“It was crazy. Everyone was just running around and yelling.”

The campus police officers found a way to calm the crowds down. However, students still felt they had a right to celebrate and the large crowd stayed.

“I’m rejoicing. I feel so happy and proud,” said Courtney Smith, a freshman from Wallace, N.C. “I started kicking and jumping. It’s so historical.”

The student is a junior at Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications.
